Background of the study

Code switching, the practice of alternating between languages in a single discourse, is a prominent feature in Nigerian digital communication. On platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, users fluidly shift between indigenous languages and English to express identity, manage social relationships, and navigate diverse conversational contexts. WhatsApp messages, often characterized by spontaneity and informality, reveal frequent and rapid code switching as users negotiate interpersonal dynamics in real time. In contrast, Facebook posts tend to be more reflective and structured, with code switching occurring in a more deliberate manner to cater to a broader audience (Obi, 2023). These differences highlight how digital environments influence linguistic practices. The study aims to investigate the patterns and motivations behind code switching in these contexts, exploring how factors such as audience, formality, and platform affordances shape language alternation (Ibrahim, 2024). By comparing WhatsApp and Facebook, the research intends to contribute to a deeper understanding of digital bilingualism in Nigeria and inform language education and policy development (Adeola, 2023).

Statement of the problem

Despite extensive anecdotal evidence of code switching in Nigerian online communication, there is limited systematic research comparing its manifestation on different platforms. Existing studies often focus on one medium, neglecting the nuanced ways in which WhatsApp and Facebook shape language alternation. This gap restricts our understanding of the social and linguistic factors that drive code switching in digital spaces, making it challenging for educators and policymakers to develop effective strategies for managing multilingual communication (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

1. To identify and document code switching patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook.

2. To analyze the sociolinguistic factors influencing code switching in these platforms.

3. To compare the frequency and functions of code switching across both media.

Research questions

1. What are the common code switching patterns in WhatsApp and Facebook posts?

2. Which sociolinguistic factors influence these practices?

3. How do the functions of code switching differ between the two platforms?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of code switching in Nigerian social media, enhancing our understanding of digital bilingualism. The insights gained will inform sociolinguistic theory and guide language education policies, helping stakeholders address the challenges of multilingual communication in digital contexts (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing code switching in WhatsApp and Facebook posts by Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

• Code Switching: Alternating between two or more languages in a conversation.

• Digital Bilingualism: The use of multiple languages in digital communication.

• Social Media Posts: User-generated content on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook.
